Small gorillaFive road trips from hell

Joy Ride isn't the first movie to figure out that life's highway is often littered with road kill. You can meet some freaky, dangerous people on the open road, as these five movies make abundantly clear.

Breakdown

Breakdown (1997)

Another sadistic trucker, this time spoiling a road trip for yuppie couple Kurt Russell and Kathleen Quinlan. Features a memorably menacing performance by J.T. Walsh.

The Hitcher

The Hitcher (1986)

The movie that convinced me that my mother was right: never pick up hitchhikers, especially Rutger Hauer. (Yes, I'm quite sure she mentioned Rutger by name.)

Detour

Detour (1945)

This time we side with the hitchhiker, a down on his luck guy thumbing his way cross country to see his girl. Things go from bad to worse when he hooks up with an embittered femme fatale in this relentlessly bleak film noir. You've gotta see this one.

From Dusk Till Dawn

From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)

Harvey Keitel and his family think they're in trouble when their motor home is invaded by a couple of ruthless bank robbers. Wait until they get to the Mexican bar full of vampires!

Dead Calm

Dead Calm (1989)

Picking up hitchhikers on the high seas isn't any better, as Sam Neill and Nicole Kidman find out in this Australian thriller.

Your thoughts ? Have a favorite road trip from hell that didn't make my list? Tell me about it.
