Vince Vaughn & Jon Favreau - Made
The poor man's Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

The first words spoken in Made are, “You guys suck.” The guys in question are Bobby and Ricky and they’re in the middle of a boxing match. Boxing is one of many things in the movie that these guys suck at.

Bobby (Jon Favreau) is an aspiring boxer, a construction worker and a part time driver for his girlfriend, Jessica, a bachelor party lap dancer. (Here's a tip for all you single guys out there. If you have any jealousy issues — any at all — you may not want to date a woman whose job involves burying her face in another man's crotch. Or at least don't go with her to work.) Ricky (Vince Vaughn) is his best friend since childhood, a motor-mouthed loser who tags along on everything Bobby does. When Bobby gets roped into doing a job for a gangster, he brings Ricky in as well even though he knows — he has to know — that Ricky's tendency to talk too much and think too little is going to screw things up.

Vince Vaughn - Made
A rare picture of Vince Vaughn not talking

Made is one of the funniest movies I’ve seen all year, largely because of the chemistry between Favreau and Vaughn, who worked together in Swingers. They play similar characters here, though there are differences. Vaughn displays the same delusional self-confidence and general cluelessness, but Ricky doesn't have quite as hard an edge as Trent, his Swingers character. Trent was stupid and had kind of a mean streak; Ricky's just stupid. Bobby, on the other hand, is a little darker than Favreau's Swingers character, less gullible, less desperate, though not much less. These two guys play off each other perfectly. I don't think there's a single conversation between them in the entire movie that doesn't escalate, slowly but absurdly, into an argument. Vaughn continues to impress with his ability to let large numbers of words tumble out of his mouth in very short periods of time, and Favreau's face is made for slow burns and exasperation.

Made, like Swingers, was written by Favreau, who has a knack for sharp dialogue and frustrating but endearing characters. On Made he also assumed director's chores, and he does a capable job on this front as well. Standout performances are delivered by Peter Falk as the aging mobster and Famke Janssen as Bobby's girlfriend. There's also a sweet natured subplot involving Bobby's relationship with Jessica's little girl that lets you see there's something at stake for the character. It works well, as does the movie as a whole. I'm still laughing at some of the scenes two days later, and what more can you ask for from a comedy?

Made
"Show me the money. Wait, that's not it. Uh, take the money and run. No... Oh, I've got it. You are so money! Yes, that's it! You are so money and you don't even know it."

Now, dear readers, I need your help with a plot point that I'm kind of confused about. DON'T READ ANY FURTHER IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN MADE AND DON'T WANT TO KNOW THE END. Besides, if you haven't seen the movie, you're really of no use to me right now. (And I mean that in the nicest possible way.)

Okay, Horace and Jimmy pick up Bobby for the final drop. Ricky is not there and Horace and Jimmy say he's not coming. Bobby is nervous, and we're meant to think that either H & J are cutting Ricky out (which would be the sensible thing to do because we all know he's just going to mess everything up) or that they have/are going to kill him. Am I right so far?

Then they get to the place, things go sour, people are about to get hurt and Ricky emerges from the back room to save the day. Huh? How did he get there? I didn't think he and Bobby even knew where they were going to be going. Horace and Jimmy wouldn't have told him. (And if they did plant him there they would have given him a real gun.)

Either I missed something big (very possible) or this just doesn't make sense. If anyone can shed any light on this for me, please email me. Quick. I'm losing sleep, people.
