The Sixth Sense (1999)

The movie that put M. Night Shyamalan on the map and introduced us all to Haley Joel Osment. Oh, and Bruce Willis was in it too. Well plotted and creepy. Supposedly had some kind of twist ending, but I didn't get it. (Kidding! I'm kidding.)

Stir of Echoes (1999)

This one came out around the same time as The Sixth Sense and was deservedly overshadowed by that film. It may not be in the same "I see dead people" league, but in any other summer, this would have been the ghost movie to see.

The Haunting (1963)

A classic. Low key, understated and utterly terrifying. Without a single computer generated effect or blood splatter, it manages to blow the over-produced but completely unfrightening remake out of the water.

House on Haunted Hill (1999)

And just to prove that I'm not biased against special effects or remakes, let me recommend this little gem. In this case, it tops the original. Set in an abandoned insane asylum — could there be a scarier location? — this one scared the hell out of me. I still have nightmares. I'm seeking professional help.

Truly, Madly, Deeply (1991)

Finally, here's one that's not scary at all. Its just a sweet, sad, funny, romantic story of a love so strong it transcends death. And if that sounds sentimental to you . . . well, I don't know, maybe it is. But I loved this movie. Maybe you will too. From writer/director Anthony Minghella, who brought us The English Patient and The Talented Mr. Ripley. (Don't know if that helps or hurts it for you.)
