Confetti
review by Melissa Prusi
Confetti - Martin Freeman and Jessica Stephenson
Quite a wardrobe upgrade for a guy who spent his last movie wandering around in a bathrobe.

The emotionally charged process of planning a wedding gets Christopher Guest-style treatment in Confetti. This British mockumentary follows three couples competing to see who can plan the most original wedding. With the help of a fourth couple, a stereotypical but likable pair of gay wedding planners, the prospective brides and grooms organize lavish ceremonies around the themes of tennis, nudism and 1930’s movie musicals. As the editor of the magazine sponsoring the contest says, “Not everyone wants their special day ruined by a gimmick. But some people do.”

What follows is an acerbic satire on tackiness and competition and the myriad ways in which a celebration of love can be strained by insecurity, one-upmanship, jealousy and family conflict. It’s performed by a talented cast of British comedy actors, the best known of which to Americans is Martin Freeman of The Office and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Anybody who makes this type of largely improvised mock documentary has to expect comparisons to Guest’s filmography, so let’s just get that out of the way right now. While Confetti’s not as funny as Waiting for Guffman, I think it’s at least as good as Best in Show and maybe a wee bit better than A Mighty Wind. The movie drags a bit in the middle but by the time the Big Day arrives and we get to see the over-the-top but fun tennis wedding, the sweet and heartfelt naked nuptials and the unlikely singer/dancers gamely hoofing their way through the musical extravaganza I was glad I’d stuck it out.
